1.organization

In my volunteer I choose ZHO (Zayed High Organization).The main goal for this organization is taking care of the special and develop their skills. In the organization there are more than 12 section each section holding certain special needs. The administration of ZHO decided to put me in the Autism Center, so they gave as a lecture about what is the Autism, and how could we work with the Autism children. In the Autism the student spread in 6 levels the highest is Alzohor, and the lowest is the sky. Every student have a plane called Almasar , where it has three kind of goals for three kind of planes. The first plane is for the lowest skill patient where the last step is joining فاث oining ere the last step is ere the als for three kind of planes. the care home in the organization. The second plane is for the medium student where the goal is make them make sample industrial work like sewing, and the last plane for the highest student by making them joining the regular schools. The Autism center is similar to any school they starting at 8:30 am and finishing at 1:00 pm, each lesson is 45 minute, and there are sixteen classroom, two speech rooms, one art room, and one behavior modification room. They use three kind of teaching system, LOVAAS for the educational environment, PECS for the picture communication, and TEEACH behaviors modification.

The volunteer in the Autism center is usually helping the teacher in controlling the student because every teacher has three students, so it is large number. And some time we teach them or guiding them. In the art class we was drawing with them and teaching them the differences between the colors. One of our special volunteer was in Alzohor class the highest class level where the student greeted us and we spelled the Arabic word, and English word with them. Always at 10:30 student have breakfast break, and the Autism center provide a certain meal , we helped them in eating. Also in the fitness room we were guiding the student to take around surround the room, we helped them in jumping over the ball, and in collecting the small balls to a container. The best part of my volunteer was the music class it was wonderful to see the student laughing and dancing, we used music instruments and singing sample music. In this volunteer we support part of the community to develop their skills. We felt about them situation how hard for them for communicate and sent a massage about one part of our community which is Autism.

4.( all I learned)

In the end we learnt many things in the volunteering About the Autism in the world and especially in UAE. About the new technologies in teaching and how it could make the patients appear their skill. Also I know that there are many famous people are autism and how they work hard and make a change , so there is no impossible.

-the important for us with autism is the shown behavior because the behavior should be clear.

_what is the meaning of behavior modification?

_there are aberrant behavior with the autism children we want to change it.
    we have three cases of behavior:
-acceptable and want to increasing it
-unacceptable try to hide it.
-not found trying to exist it.

_How you modifying the autism children behavior?

_to modify there are strategies like ......

-reinforcement
-formation
-suppression
-escalation
all these techniques are used depending on the situation you are dealing with.

Our last day

we started this day, by meeting the director of the autism in ZHO they thank us for our volunteering and the ask us if we need anything , then they told us they prefer that we work individually  everyone in certain class, so I went to Behavior specialist. He told me about his work which is make the studying plane for every student individually depending to his skills and age. Then he explained the (masar ) program which is mean the road for student. The masar have three road the first road for the high skill student where they can join regular school in the future , the low level where they have care , and the medium skill student where they can have job in the future. In the end we thank the organization for  allow us to work with them.

Speech therapist

first  of all, at 8:00 am they asked us to join the speech and communication therapist. He told us that usually 60 percent of the autism to 70 percent they cannot speak , but the other 30 percent the begin to speak in different age depend to the patient, for example last year one of the patients start to speak  at age of 10 years and five years in the autism center, I was very surprise about this , and how could I helping these children to have better life with this organization. The teacher have varies ways of teach one of it is board maker which it have six levels depend of   students skills. Then we went to the sport lessen where we practiced many exercises which I thought it is very helpful to encourage the student to communicate with the others.

MEDIUM CLASS

In the beginning , the class started at 8:00 am with a greeting , then identify the lesson topic of the week which it was the members of the human body. Next, Speech Specialist came and started to teach. First he stated teaching the eye ,for example indicating to his eyes and the patients eyes then pronounce it . After that he stated to teach the student how to pronounce their names individually. Then the art lesson began with the same class , the of the important activities Row scraps of paper in the form of numbers and letters. After that were the breakfast time were there are certain meals every week , but some students brought food from the home. The last lesson were music, first we sung then we watch children music in the computer.

Lecture about autism

At eight o'clock morning the organization set an lecture about what is autism. In the beginning of the lecture we learn that leo kanner was first person who explorer the autism. Autism is Developmental neurological disorder that affects the brain as they said in the lecture. Also there are 75 patient with autism every ten thousand. About the causes of Autism its anonymous until now, but there are many Hypothesis. For example, Environmental hypothesis, Genetic hypothesis , and many other Hypothesis. Then they told us about the autism properties ,these properties contain social characteristics , communication aspect , cognitive faces , sensory properties,  and  behavioral characteristics. Next they told us about types of autism which is high autism , medium autism , and light autism. And  they explain the way of teaching in the organization. in the end, it was very helpful lecture to understand what is autism

Al Zohor and medium classes

In the morning, we started our day in ZHO at autism department at 8:00 am in medium class in this class there is one teacher and three students. all of these student they cannot talk so the teacher started teach them with pictures, these lessons contain various way of teach depend on the patient level. For example, matching between the same picture or decorate the beads. the teacher said that the is autism patient who are creative in particular specialty.for example , Dr. Temple Grandin and the Painter Stephen Wiltshire  . After 40 minutes the first lesson finished and one of the patient leaved us because he had treating  with water lesson. Than we visited the Al Zohor class whic is the highest class where there are students can talk. last step were the sport room where we take the students to Take rolls around square, then we finished.

Normal class

we start our volunteering at 8:00 am when the students arrive with morning assembly with the national anthem, part of alcoran alkareem read by one student after that they did some sport exercises. when they finished they went to the classes so we volunteered with certain class. In our class there were six student first lesson was about matt but before that he took the attendance but these attendance took with another way it took by picture because 70% to 85% of the patient usually they cant talk so the use in the organization PECS system which is  teaching program  Specializes in communicate by pictures. because of the time of the class the teachers  couldn't  teach math ,but the told us that every three students have one teacher because of that there are two teachers in the class .Also we learnt that the program to Modifying student behavior of student is LOVAAS system and the programm to Organizing the educational environment is TEEACH  system.After tat at 10:00 am we leaved the class.

My first day volunteering

                                                                                

first of all, we started our day at 8:00 am morning  by register with the main manager of the volunteering, by filling the registration form and listen to the main purpose of our volunteering and the rules inside the department. they told us that our group will volunteer in the Autism department so we went there. when we arrive there they took us in tour in the department starting with the sport room then we saw the highest sick condition  where there were four sick children after this room we went to the next room were the three sick children in less condition. After this short tour they told us that they have 67 patients the proportion is four males to one female with this disease. there are  three sections depend on the age. first section children from age 5 to age 9 ,than the children from 9 to 13 , after that the adult from 13 t0 17. Next we choose the Art class where there was four patients we paint with them for one class which is duration forty minutes. in the end we leaved at 12:00 pm.

The group will volunteer as assistants during the special needs classes held in the organization by interacting with individual with special needs. This project willhelp them be more trusting and active in the society.

6.     To be successful what need to be done? what are the needs of the participants?

Ex: In the end, students must be able to type 20wpm English typing. 

There are more then 12 service the ZHO provided . one of these service is the sport club. In the sport club we Talents of young people in clubs, which encouraged them to make gold and silver medals and a bronze in all their participation at all levels of the global, regional and local.

 

7.     What are the Benefits to the participants? (Both volunteers and recipients)

For the recipients they get help and knowledge that are helpful in their life, also some time its basic needs. For the volunteers they work with people who need help and treating them in varies field so they will support an important class of the community and get new experiences and informations.

8.     Any potential problems you see arising?

First , how could we connect with the people with special needs and will they accept as. Do we know how to treating them or we will take lectures. Also the biggest problem is how can we mix between studying and volunteering by scheduling the study time and volunteering.
